Wednesday 

Campbell-- He decides to call his mother back after she called him four times to complain about his father hanging out with a younger woman. After that conversation Campbell decides to go for coffee at his favorite place only to be question about his service dog again and giving a fake reason to have a service dog. When he gets to his office after coffee Campbell finds Anna there polishing his doorknobs in attempt to pay him back for being her attorney for free. He then gets a call from Anna's mother saying that the law suit is just a misunderstanding and Anna wants to call it off not knowing that Anna was with him.  Anna says she doesn't want to back out. He then recalls a memory that he has of his father, the one and only time that they went sail boating together. Campbell ends up disappointing his father, who looks at him as if he were an embarrassment. In the court room Campbell argues with Sara Fitzgerald who decided to be her own attorney about whats best for Anna, so the Judge decides to talk to Anna.   

Anna-- Anna imagines what her funeral would be like, how it would differ from Kate's. She thinks no one would come, only the very few that truly cared and she would just be left as a memory to show up in peoples minds, but everyone would come to Kate's. In court Anna has to talk to the Judge, she stays calm up until she starts thinking about Kate and the fact that she doesn't want to give Kate her kidney, but her parents never ask her. The judge decides to appoint Anna a guardian ad litem. After talking with Anna the Judge decides to have hearing. Once at home Brian asks Sara to cool down and she loses it saying that she can't be calm because her daughter just signed Kate's death  sentence. Kate then runs to her room and Anna leaves the house to sit at the laundry mat to think.

Jesse Fitzgerald-- As a child Jesse used to light bath splash on fire, it burns blue. He showed Anna one time and that helped him to realize that he was actually part of the family because him and Anna were the same. Not on the outside, but on the inside, people think they know what their getting, and they're always wrong. Jesse goes for a drive and thinks about what would happen if he killed himself, would it be better for everybody? He thinks he would be better off dead than alive since he is an organ donor. Being bored and upset Jesse goes off to light a fire. He finds an old abandoned building then dumps sawdust in the shape of his initials pours acid on it and lights it with a cigarette. By the time Jesse gets home he finds his mother frantic and has to drive her and Kate, who is vomiting blood to the ER. She seriously needs a kidney, but before Jesse can leave she mouths tell Anna. 

Sara-- 1990-1991 Sara is pregnant with Anna and is talking with a bunch of pregnant women who are still trying to figure everything out for their baby, when Sara already knows everything about hers. Sara and Brian end up on a newsmagazine talk show to talk about Anna being a "designer baby". Sara explains that Anna isn't a designer baby just a baby that has Kate's traits so she can save her sister. Sara gives birth to Anna on New Year's Eve and once Anna is born the cord blood is taken to be preserved for Kate's use.

Julia Romano-- Julia is now introduced into the novel. She is arguing with her twin sister Izzy who has just moved into Julia's apartment after breaking up with her girlfriend. In the middle of having sisterly conflict Judge DeSalvo calls asking Julia to be the guardian ad litem for the Fitzgerald case. She then goes to the Fitzgerald house to find Anna jumping over side walk cracks and decides to take her to the zoo so that she can get to know her and her opinions on the case. Anna then asks to go home and has Julia walk her to the door so her mother doesn't kill her for being gone. Julia then heads Campbell's office where she feels like she is seventeen again and remembering the relationship her and Campbell hand.

Campbell-- Campbell is writing as Julia walks in so he doesn't notice until she talks, which startles him since he hasn't seen her in fifteen years. Since Julia doesn't want to talk about the past she gets right to work talking about the case and what she thinks is best for Anna. Campbell thinks that since Sara Fitzgerald is trying to push her thoughts onto Anna that she should be removed from the home until the case is over, Julia disagrees. After talking about the case Campbell flashbacks to high school when he first met Julia. She was different than everyone else and everyone thought she was a freak. So one day Campbell follows her to ask for "homework help" so that he can get to know her. Campbell makes a house visit to see Anna and get to know her a little since Julia called him out on not knowing enough. After seeing Anna and talking he goes to see Julia to apologze and start over, but mistakenly talks to Izzy Julia's twin. Julia does show up and he gets to talk to her about their past.

Anna-- Anna just wants to go see Kate, but her mother is also with Kate and not very happy with Anna at the moment. So she asks Jesse to drive her to the hospital and create a diversion. Anna thinks back to a time when Kate was asking her the best way to die and Anna didn't want to talk about it. As Jesse and Anna arrive at the hospital he gives her cab fair for the way home then Jesse stumbles through the hallways screaming pretending to be drunk to get his mom out of the hospital room. It works and she comes out taking Jesse away to get some coffee. Anna again thinks back to a time when Kate was in relapse and the family was playing football and Jesse tackled Kate forgetting that she was fragile and Kate couldn't have been any happier to be treated like a normal person. Once in Kate's room Anna crawls up in bed with Kate and they lye there together.
