SYMBOLISM-- See Themes and Symbolism tab for examples.

CONNOTATION-- This novel talks a lot about hospitals, while everyone knows what they are to every person a hospital will mean something a little different depending on past experiences.
There are also the stars. To some they are just balls of fire, to others they are legends and stories or even a map to guide them to their destination.

IMAGERY--There is plenty of imagery in this novel, for instance on page 95 as Jesse Fitzgerald talks about lighting a fire and pages 198-199 Brian Fitzgerald is trying to help a elderly woman who fell.  There is also a section when Anna and Brian talking about the meaning of the stars.

DICTION-- Throughout the novel the author uses several different tones and phrases and wording. Most of the time the change in diction comes with a change in narrator, or character, within each chapter.
