The blurred line between write and wrong.-- Anna has to decide whether her own wants out weigh her sisters medical needs. Also Sara Fitzgerald Anna's mother needs to put aside her favoritism for her children and think of each child's needs.
The bond of sisterhood.-- Throughout the novel there are many sister bonds. There is Kate and Anna, Sara and Zanne, as well as Julia and Izzy.
SYMBOLS
Fire-- symbolizes warmth as well as destruction. This is shown in the novel by Jesse who lights fires in order to feel in control of something and get somebody's attention. Also the fact that Jesse's family is falling apart could be portrayed in the destruction of the burning buildings.
Stars-- symbolizes the unknown or misunderstood. Anna is named after a star and she feels like no one understands what she wants or why she feels the way she does.
