Setting
The novel occurs over the span of two weeks in the present day of 2004 in the Fitzgerald household as well as in the hospital where Kate Fitzgerald is regularly due to her fight with leukemia, the fire station where Brian Fitzgerald works, and the courthouse. There are also several parts of the story from the point of view of the past, from 1990, the year Kate was diagnosed, to 2002 and all the hospital visits in between.
