The epilogue is completely narrated by Kate, after Anna's death. She explains how there should be a statute of limitation on grief, a rule book on when its alright to wake up crying and for how long it's okay to do so, and how there will be no fine given for feeling the need to clean out her desk; take down her artwork or turn over pictures as you pass because it cuts fresh again every time she sees it again. It's alright to measure the time she has been gone. Kate's father claimed to see Anna in the stars for a longtime after her death and her mother believed that Anna would come back to her and would look for signs everywhere and in anything. Kate however blamed herself for Anna's death since Anna was at the court house for a lawsuit Kate wanted her to file and that Kate was the one who was supposed to be dead. The kidney Kate needed that Anna provided after her death brought Kate into remission for eight years. Kate believes that she is in remission since Anna died and took her place in death. After so long grieving Kate's mother finally realized that there was no food left in the house so she went shopping and her father even payed some bills. Kate even watched I Love Lucy and laughed. It took Jesse telling her that Anna would have laughed to foe Kate to believe what she had done was okay. Kate wonders how much Anna keeps tabs on the family, if she knows about Campbell and Julia being close at the beginning then slowly drifting away as it was hard to not talk about Anna. If she was at Jesse's graduation or know that their father turned to alcohol as a solution or that Kate know teaches children to dance. A year after Anna's death Kate and her mother found a picture of Anna and spent hours looking at it memorizing everything about her, and that Kate kept the picture so that if she ever starts to forget she can remember. When she starts to feel this way Kate goes into the bathroom and looks at the scare from her kidney transplant and can remember that everywhere she goes Anna will always be with her.
